Reliability, Maintenance, and Repair of Geothermal Heat PumpsGeothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are durable and highly reliable because they have few moving parts, and because they are sheltered from the elements. When occasional maintenance is required (such as air filter changes or heat-exchanger coil cleaning), the components in the living space are easily accessible. The underground or underwater piping requires very little attention after installation, although open-loop systems can have problems with clogging and corrosion, depending on your water quality. Often the piping has a 25- to 50-year warranty, and the GHP itself typically lasts 20 years or more. For information about maintenance requirements and repair for your particular system, contact your system supplier.
